Megaliths or megalithic monuments
Megaliths or megalithic monuments are also entries in the great encyclopedia of Brockhaus and Efron
– prehistoric constructions of great stone blocks or slabs, of stone (Neolithic), bronze, and partly of later eras, which served as either tombs or monuments, or shrines, and these different types partly into one another. Megaliths or megalithic monuments monuments are especially numerous and diverse in Brittany, where they earlier than in other districts, drew the attention of scientists (in the old days they were called “druid”, i.e. used for religious purposes the druids or Gallic priests); therefore, to identify these monuments common, mainly, the names are borrowed from the Breton language, namely the menhirs (men – stone, Mr – long, high) – high standing stone, vozdvizheniya, probably in memory of some event or person or to refer to known places; the dolmen (dol – table, men – stone) – camera 4 standing perpendicular between itself and the plates, covered on top with a large horizontal plate ; a cromlech (crom – circle) – the circle of stones, self or surrounding the dolmen. Particular types of Megaliths or megalithic monuments monuments are of camera corridors (allees couvertes, eg. in Provence); the rows of stones (alignements, for example in Carnac, in Brittany, sometimes stretching for a mile or more; Cup stones – large boulders with pot in them grooves, apparently of natural origin, but is sometimes served, it seems, for religious (sacrificial) purposes; rocking stones (pierres branlantes) is set on a narrow plane so that they can be easily driven in an oscillatory motion, but the enormity of his remaining in the same form over the centuries (also, apparently of natural origin, although man was able sometimes to facilitate their installation); asiaonline graves (from large panels set in a pit); boat grave-stones, placed so as to produce an outline of the boat, sometimes very large, and with transverse septa, simulating as though benches for Seating (such graves are known in Sweden and the Baltic provinces; they were used for burial, Viking, etc.). Megaliths or megalithic monuments monuments all more in France, Spain and the Balearic Islands, in England, in North. Germany, Algeria, in Palestine, we in the Crimea and the Caucasus, also in some places in Siberia (menhirs and cromlechs in the minusa region), Mongolia (“deer stones”, i.e. with images of deer), etc. In some districts of India the dolmens, cromlechs, etc. are erected to the present time.
